AWG 3.1 · R‑VPN · iOS

Step 1

1. Download

Install AmneziaWG 3.1.4 or newer from the App Store (iOS 15 or later). It is available in the Russian App Store too, no foreign Apple ID needed. If AmneziaWG is already installed, update it in the App Store: older versions (before 3.1.3) cannot open AWG 3.1 configs.

AWG 1.0 configs from the “AmneziaWG” tab keep working in the new version, and that tab stays in your dashboard. Routers (Keenetic, OpenWrt and others) do not support AWG 3.1 yet — keep using the “AmneziaWG” tab there.

Other apps that work: DefaultVPN 2.0.1.1 or newer (available in the Russian App Store, iOS 16 or later) and AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5 or newer — it is not in the Russian App Store, you will need an Apple ID from another country.

Step 2

2. Select region

Open your dashboard (a computer is handier: you will scan the QR code with the phone) and select the “AWG 3.1” technology — the button next to “AmneziaWG”. While AWG 3.1 is in beta, only beta testers see this button.

In the “Connect to server” block expand the region you need: North America, Europe, Asia & Middle East, exUSSR or South America. The closer the region, the lower the ping.

Step 3

3. Select country

Press “Connect” under the flag you need — the server is activated and moves to the “Current connections” block. Activate several at once: one server is not enough, and switching between ready tunnels is faster than returning to the dashboard. Servers on the “AWG 3.1” tab are activated separately from the “AmneziaWG” tab.

Step 4

4. Download config files

Every activated server has two buttons: “Config file” for the configuration file and “QR-Code” for the same config as a code. On an iPhone the QR is easier: open the dashboard on a computer and press “QR-Code” for the server you need.

An AWG 3.1 QR code is denser than usual: if the camera does not pick it up, zoom the page in or add the server from the file (step 5). Configs from the “AmneziaWG” tab do not work with AWG 3.1 servers, and vice versa.

Step 5

5. Configuration import

In AmneziaWG tap “+” → “Create from QR code” and point the camera at the code on the computer screen. The app asks you to name the tunnel — give it a clear name, the country for example — and press “Save”. Without a second device, open the dashboard on the iPhone, press “Config file”, then in AmneziaWG tap “+” → “Create from file or archive” and pick the file in Downloads. Add at least five servers this way.

If AmneziaWG says “Unable to import tunnel” / “The file … does not contain a valid AmneziaWG configuration”, or “Invalid QR Code” when scanning, the app is too old: AWG 3.1 needs 3.1.3 or newer, the App Store has 3.1.4. Update it (step 1) and import again.

In DefaultVPN and AmneziaVPN a server is added from the file: download “Config file” on the iPhone and import it with “+” in the app (in AmneziaVPN: “+” → under “Other connection options” pick “File with connection settings” → the .conf file → “Connect”).

Step 6

6. Connection

Flip the switch next to the tunnel you need. iOS asks once to allow adding a VPN configuration — confirm it, and a VPN icon appears in the status bar. Switching countries is done with the same switches.

AWG 3.1 is in beta. If the tunnel is on but websites do not open, try another server. If none works, switch back to the “AmneziaWG” tab for now and tell our support which server and which app (with its version) you used.
