AWG 3.1 · R‑VPN · macOS

Step 1

1. Download

Install AmneziaWG 3.1.4 or newer from the Mac App Store (macOS 12 or later, Intel and Apple Silicon Macs). It is available in the Russian App Store too. If AmneziaWG is already installed, update it in the App Store: older versions (before 3.1.3) cannot open AWG 3.1 configs. AmneziaWG for Mac has no separate installer (.dmg) — the App Store is the only source.

AWG 1.0 configs from the “AmneziaWG” tab keep working in the new version, and that tab stays in your dashboard. Routers (Keenetic, OpenWrt and others) do not support AWG 3.1 yet — keep using the “AmneziaWG” tab there.

AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5 or newer works too — the installer AmneziaVPN-5.0.3.0-macos.pkg (the official 5.0.3.0 build from the GitHub release, Intel and Apple Silicon), macOS 13 or later. If an old AmneziaVPN 4.8.x installed from a .dmg is present, remove it first.

Step 2

2. Select region

Open your dashboard and select the “AWG 3.1” technology — the button next to “AmneziaWG”. While AWG 3.1 is in beta, only beta testers see this button.

In the “Connect to server” block expand the region you need: North America, Europe, Asia & Middle East, exUSSR or South America. The closer the region, the lower the ping.

Step 3

3. Select country

Press “Connect” under the flag you need — the server is activated and moves to the “Current connections” block. Activate several at once: one server is not enough, and switching between ready tunnels is faster than returning to the dashboard. Servers on the “AWG 3.1” tab are activated separately from the “AmneziaWG” tab.

Step 4

4. Download config files

Every activated server has a “Config file” button — it downloads the configuration file for Windows and macOS (the “QR-Code” button next to it is for phones). Download the files for every server you activated.

AWG 3.1 files are named like mad_awg3_1.conf: the “_awg3_” part tells them apart from the old ones, and they will not replace your AmneziaWG tunnels. Configs from the “AmneziaWG” tab do not work with AWG 3.1 servers, and vice versa.

Step 5

5. Configuration import

Do not double-click the .conf file: macOS will reply that AmneziaWG cannot open files in the “WireGuard wg-quick configuration file” format. Import only from inside the app.

Click the AmneziaWG icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen → “Import Tunnel(s) from File…” and pick the files you downloaded, all at once if you like. Other ways: in the “Manage AmneziaWG Tunnels” window use the “Import tunnel(s) from file” button (shown while the list is empty), “+” at the bottom left, or File → “Import Tunnel(s) from File…” (⌘O). macOS asks once to allow adding a VPN configuration — confirm it.

If AmneziaWG says “Interface contains unrecognized key …” (RandomTrailers, DisableCookies or HeaderProtectionKey, for example), the app is too old: AWG 3.1 needs 3.1.3 or newer, the App Store has 3.1.4. Update it (step 1) and import the files again.

In AmneziaVPN a server is added from the file: “+” → under “Other connection options” pick “File with connection settings” → the .conf file → “Connect”.

Step 6

6. Connection

Select the tunnel you need in the list on the left and press “Activate” — the status changes to Active and the connection is up. The same button disconnects it, and switching countries simply means picking another tunnel from the same list.

AWG 3.1 is in beta. If the tunnel is on but websites do not open, try another server. If none works, switch back to the “AmneziaWG” tab for now and tell our support which server and which app (with its version) you used.

If something does not work out, message our online consultant — the turquoise rocket icon in the bottom-right corner. We will help you and answer your questions.
